"EXODUS FROM EDEN" - Ajayi Joshua M.

“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good . . .”
    Gen. 1:31

Exodus from Eden is synonymously saying Departure from Eden. When it comes to the issue of Eden, some of us can’t do without thinking of questions such as; why didn’t Adam and Eve eat the fruit from the tree of life? Why the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Why did God allow Satan to stroll freely in the Garden of Eden?

Did God plant the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? If yes, why! This article was sequentially formulated and tried to work out the coordinates of man’s problems, locate their origin and then annihilate them. Exodus from Eden is an episode that occurred in Genesis (which is known as), “The Book of Beginnings” not because it begins with “In the beginning” (Gen. 1:1) but because it is indeed the beginning of almost everything; such as: Creation; Gardening; Law; Fall of man; Sacrifice; Killing; Love; Conception; Hatred; Faith; Slavery; War and so on. The conclusive part of this article isn’t a termination point; it is indeed, an irrefutable final decision, based on facts and truths that will drive you through extra miles. Hence, in other to do an okay comprehensive brief job, the scope of this article is therefore, limited to the following subtopics:

    1.  The first thou shall not!
    2. The origin of merits and demerits!
    3. Annihilating the tree of the knowledge of good and evil

    1. The First thou shall not

As a 200 level student in my Short Term Ministerial Course (STMC) in Akure, when studying the Pentateuch, I was burdened with the issue of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

So I asked my lecturer, “Sir; did God create the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?” If he had said no; then I could have asked that why then did God allow it in a perfect garden like Eden, where the most precious of His creatures were inhabitants!

But my lecturer said yes! Then I wondered; how could that be! If in God’s blueprint, man was designed to have dominion over all the earth (Gen. 1:26) yet, this same man was warned not to eat what he had dominion over! Even God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good . . . (Gen. 1:31) . . . “not good and evil!” I wasn’t done with my little wondering when I came across Jesus’ comment that says, “Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up (Matt. 15:13).”

Well then, maybe God created it (the tree of the knowledge of good and evil) but God didn’t plant it! So I further asked my lecturer that, with reference to this comment of Jesus Christ (the 2nd Adam), “Does it mean that the 1st Adam could have uprooted the tree of the knowledge of good and evil since it was of no use to him (and also, God only said, “do not eat of it”, He never said, “do not uproot it!)?” Before the advent of all the ‘thou shall nots’, as recorded in Exodus 20; here was the first of them all which was powerful enough to prevent all others in Genesis 2:17, standing in the centre of the Garden of Eden.

I guess you are curious to know about my lecturer’s response in my STMC! Due to the formulated sequence of this article, I have decided to present his answer in this manner and it is my craving that you get the message; Thou shall not mess with the “thou shall nots” else, you will have to run the race of merits and demerits!

    2. The Origin of Merits and Demerits
It is a common statement, that, “Nothing has advantages without disadvantages.” This statement is indirectly referring to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil which was in the centre of the Garden of Eden. That’s its origin. Man was created with no blemish and the Bible attested to this in the last verse of the first chapter of Genesis, “And God saw everything (man not excluded) that he had made, and, behold, it was very good…” Man did not inherit a demerit from God.

Even though he was given the freedom of choice, yet he never for once argued with God; he never defended himself before God; he never tried to justify himself. When God had not made his wife, Adam never complained! Observe that when God made his wife, Adam said, “This is NOW bone of my bones . . .” (Meaning he knew there wasn’t his kind but he didn’t grieve God).

He never for any reason went on strike and the work in the Garden went on smoothly. In fact, he was such a workaholic, that God had to cause a deep sleep to fall upon him before He could operate on him in order to make him a help meet. “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed (Gen. 2:25). . . Bravo Daddy!!!”

Alas! Merits and demerits were triggered in Gen. 3:6. When Adam and his wife knew that they were naked; they went on strike (. . . how can we be working for Him and He left us naked. . .)! They left the work in the Garden and went and fetch fig leaves, sewed them together and made aprons for themselves (Clearly, something is definitely wrong with them now).

They hid themselves from God (. . . lack of respect . . .!). They both refused to acknowledge that they’ve made a mistake and apologize. Thus, they defended and justified themselves before God (. . . arrogance . . .!). Consequently, they were sent forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence they were taken. If we don’t want to be denied heaven and if we want to eradicate the possibility of going to hell; then we must annihilate the tree of the knowledge of good and evil!

    3. Annihilating the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil

Annihilating the tree is a continuous function. As the annihilation tends to infinity, then heaven comes alive in us and we will become use to the culture of heaven. Telling lies will become so strange to us. Stealing will become a mission impossible.

There would be no such thing like, “The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat”, nor will there be anything like, “The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat”, and there would be no Nebuchadnezzar, strong enough to make us bow to his 21st century image. In this generation, we have mistaken Perfection for Goodness! We ask; can anyone be perfect in this our current dispensation? Didn’t Jesus also say, there is none good but one, that is, God?

Delving into this realm is beyond the scope of this article but I will simply say; if perfection is a mission impossible, then Christ would not even dare tell us to be perfect! Nevertheless, the writer of this article is also your comrade in the race and by the grace of God; we will get there in Jesus’ name. Amen. How do we annihilate the tree? Do we need cutlass, digger, hoe or any modern machinery to work with? Not; at all. What we need is Obedience!

Obedience is better than sacrifice (1Sam. 15:22). With Obedience, we can fulfill Joshua 1:8 and the more we continue in Obedience, the more we imbibe the culture of heaven and become terrors to the devil. For instance, when the tempter (Satan) came to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus’ responses went thus:
It is written (that means He had read or heard from those that had read), man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matt. 4:4) . . . <Obedience>

It is written again (that means He had read or heard from those that had read), Thou shalt not tempt the Lord your God (Matt. 4:7) . . . <Obedience>
Get the hence, Satan: for it is written (that means He had read or heard from those that had read), Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him alone shalt thou serve (Matt. 4:10) . . . <Obedience>

At every instance of the temptation, Jesus kept starving the tempter with Obedience. The tempter wanted disobedience but he kept getting Obedience which he could not eat. Hence, he left. A foolish woman once said in Prov. 9:17, that, “Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” Oh yes; that’s the fact but not the truth. Even stolen meat and sweets don’t taste bitter. Do they?

Moreover, whether pre-marital, marital or extra-marital; sex is sweet. The three of them have something in common . . . pleasure (Fact) . . ., but the end of the 1st and the 3rd is bitter as wormwood and sharp as two-edged sword (Truth). They will both lead to your death and afterwards, drag you to hell. So, Sex (irrespective of its category), Lies (white or black), Forgery, Masturbation, Malpractice, Gossip, Malice, Embezzlement of public funds etc are things the flesh enjoys but be convinced that these are fruits that can be found only in the branches of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Therefore, activate annihilation and make it a continuous process. Barrister Paul said and I quote, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a cast-away (1Cor. 9:27).” Get thee behind me, Satan! (Jesus Christ)

Remember; Merits and Demerits crop up when you mess with, “Thou shall not (this is where the problems are located)”. The flesh stands as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (this is the origin of the problems . . .).

The works of the flesh (which in other words are the fruits of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil) are as follows: Fornication (for the unmarried ones), adultery (for the married ones), lies (white or black), gossip (loved mostly by “jobless” women), anger (which rests in the bosom of fools), embezzlement of public funds (common among politicians), hypocrisy (found even in the church!), hatred (which rests in the heart of murderers), masturbation, quarrel, pornography etc.

At times, observing the Deeper Life Campus Fellowship brethren; confusingly, one may be asking; do they have feelings at all? Do they have those sexual hormones which trigger the urge for sex? Do they have eyes to see those beautiful girls and handsome boys on campus or are they blind that they can’t see those babes? Of course they have eyes and they can see those babes! Of course, they have oestrogen and testosterone and they can also feel the urge for sex.

Touch them and you will know they have feelings and that they are humans too. But they are “Addicts of God’s Word”. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts (Gal. 5:24). After the flesh is crucified; watch out, because, though the flesh would have no power to feed itself but it can ask you! Recall that, on the cross at Calvary, the flesh made a request, “I thirst”.

In this episode, the flesh asked for refreshment (sustenance) but never got it until it gave up the ghost. If the flesh sends you a requisition, will you give the flesh its requested satisfaction or rather ignore it? Will you give it The World or The Word? If you continuously pick the latter of these options, then the flesh (the tree of the knowledge of good and evil) shall be annihilated (Problems solved) and you will see that, “It is finished” indeed. Till I come (your way again), give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine (1 Tim. 4:13).
